The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
