In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his term.

An Unprecedented Figure

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
